17 Constable Woodland Provides an Insight into Police Operations

August – September 1866

Woodland’s assessment of his fellow police officers gives an insight into how the policing of the Southern District worked. Disturbingly, his account indicates that some police were on friendly terms with the bushrangers and their harbourers and were in no hurry to bring the bushrangers to justice.

Senior Constable Watson’s Friends

Woodland was stationed at the Jingera Police Station, at Wild Cattle Flat, serving there with Constable Edmund Egan (No. 851). Egan was born in Limerick, Ireland and had been a labourer before joining the police on 26 March 1862. He was twenty-six years old. The officer in charge was Senior Constable Walter Watson (No. 593). Watson was born in England and had been a soldier before joining the New South Wales Police on 1 June 1860. He was thirty-nine years old.1 Woodland thought Egan ‘a plucky fellow’, but had a very low opinion of Watson.2
